Daily reading for April 01 from “As If I Was In Your Office…”

Character Defects “We’ve been practicing the disease of self, of anger, of self-pity, of hate, of resentment, and of self-will, all of which are character defects!” Fr. Paul – April 8, 2009.

As alcoholics we get soft in the head and hard in the heart and we believe all these things are good. We are not afraid to fight or tell people off. Our disease keeps us in control! There is a lot of self-will, self-pity, hate and resentment over twenty, thirty, forty years by the time we get into recovery. Then the blindness sets in. We have no idea that the heart is hard. It is impossible for us to accept love or recognize love or give love. We have become a loveless person with no peace, no happiness or joy. God is the power. What we could not do God is able to do. We ask God to remove our character defects. Then we can be part of recovery. We owe it to the others to cooperate.

My commitment today is to be honest about my defects of character and ask for help to see them.

Not only did the people at Brentwood change my son, but they changed me as a mother. It allowed me to develop an amazing relationship with my son. When we found Brentwood, I was as much in need of help as my son was. I could not have done this journey without help. Without Brentwood’s help!

By coming to Family Support meetings with an open heart, I found a support system like no others. Brentwood staff have continued to work with my son in his Recovery while I worked my own program. This has allowed us to celebrate and grow in recovery as a family. I will be forever grateful to Brentwood!
