Communication of Feelings - “Most of us, as alcoholics, weren’t very healthy at expressing our feelings!” Don Russell – August 28, 2009.

Most of us, as alcoholics, kept all our feelings bottled up and we did not express them to anyone. We shut our feelings down before we were ten years old, maybe younger. We learned to speak from our heads. There was my head, my mouth, my words, and no feelings. So we stuff things down and try to bury it until we feel like we do not fit in. We are misfits according to our disease. We completely miss the mark. Physically we may look our age but emotionally we could be just ten years old. In recovery they will help me to grow up emotionally until we get closer to our physical age and can learn how to communicate on a feeling level instead of just with our heads. When our heart is reached the emotions and feelings which were buried and confused start to make sense.

My commitment today is to continue to learn how to express my feelings in a healthy way.

Not only did the people at Brentwood change my son, but they changed me as a mother. It allowed me to develop an amazing relationship with my son. When we found Brentwood, I was as much in need of help as my son was. I could not have done this journey without help. Without Brentwood’s help!

By coming to Family Support meetings with an open heart, I found a support system like no others. Brentwood staff have continued to work with my son in his Recovery while I worked my own program. This has allowed us to celebrate and grow in recovery as a family. I will be forever grateful to Brentwood!
